IC Honors Student Spotlight: Erin Doran ’18

After a long break, we’re pleased feature junior honors student, Erin Doran as this week’s student spotlight. Erin is from Canandaigua, NY and studies Television Radio at Ithaca College. She’s also working towards a minor in Communication Management and Design. With a concentration in media production, Erin is highly involved in Ithaca College Television (ICTV) where she’s worked on four television shows including Fake Out, Ithaca College’s original game show. She’s been highly involved as the philanthropy chair and now newly elected president of Ithaca College’s chapter of the Delta Kappa Alpha National Professional Cinematic Society through which she collaborates with other Ithaca students to serve their community through cinema. Erin also serves on the executive board of IC Courage, helping to plan events to raise money for Camp Good Days and Special Times, a summer camp for children and families affected by cancer. Since January, Erin has been living it up on the West Coast, studying in Los Angeles with the ICLA program and interning at CONAN, the late night television show hosted by Conan O’Brien. A lover of dogs, music, theater, and working with kids, Erin is a distinguished member of the honors community. In order to learn more about her experiences as an Honors student, continue reading in her own words below!

'18 Erin Doran

Your favorite part about IC:
“Everyone on campus is so friendly! The Park School definitely has a community feel that promotes creativity and collaboration alongside learning, and the location in the number one college-town in the nation is wonderful. There’s always something to do both on and off campus. Our alumni are also amazing, and with so many networking opportunities offered through Ithaca, I feel more confident pursuing a career in the television and film industry!”

Your favorite Honors seminar you’ve taken and why:
“Creativity and Madness with Mary Beth O’Connor! I loved the psychological and philosophical aspects of the course, as well as the artistic. When we got to the class presentations, I enjoyed hearing each student’s insight on a selected topic dealing with the connection between creativity and madness. Our class discussions every day were intriguing, and throughout the semester I developed a new level of insight into the world of creativity through the eyes of those regarded by society as “geniuses” or “insane,” and discovered how these words do not do justice to what really may be happening.”

The coolest opportunity you’ve had through IC and/or the Honors program:
“Right now, I am participating in the ICLA program, and am interning at the late night talk show, Conan! I love living in Los Angeles and having the opportunity to work on set at the Warner Bros. lot everyday alongside other Ithaca Alumni! Everyone is so incredibly nice, and this semester has been a dream come true. Being able to participate in the ICLA program was a huge factor that led to my decision to go to Ithaca. There are so many great opportunities Ithaca provides for its students, both on campus and across the country!”

Favorite part about Ithaca College: “I love being able to walk past the Pub, through the Quad, or around the library and recognize as many faces as I do. Whether it’s my best friend or someone I haven’t talked to since freshmen year, I see certain people every day that feel familiar somehow. It’s taken spending semesters elsewhere to realize how comforting that aspect of IC is.”

Favorite Honors seminar and why:In the Beginning: Origin Narratives in Science, Religion and Fiction, with Nancy Menning & Luke Keller, because it got me thinking in ways I never have.”

Coolest opportunity you’ve had through IC and/or the Honors Program:Exploring Ottawa during its Winter Festival!”

Favorite part about IC: “I love the incredible alumni base IC has built up over the years. Alumni are always willing to talk to you about your plans and goals and give advice.”

Favorite seminar (so far) and why: “I loved taking Bruce Henderson’s Teenage Wasteland class. Not only were the books we read very interesting, but the class really bonded and got to know each other. It was a great way to become more well-read and to meet new people in my freshman year.”

Coolest opportunity from IC and/or the Honors Program: “Through the Park School Internship Database, I learned about a syndication and post-production company in my hometown. I applied to be an intern and was able to learn a lot about the industry the summer after my freshman year. It was a great experience and I can’t wait to see what else IC has in store for me.”

Current positions: “I am currently the National Marketing & Public Relations Coordinator for a lifestyle hospitality company called The ONE Group, based out of the corporate offices in New York City. Our company develops restaurant concepts and operates food & beverage for hotels across the US, UK and Europe. I write a lot of press releases, plan a lot of awesome events (I’ve been to the Super Bowl, SXSW, Coachella and Tribeca Film Festival this year!) and develop marketing and branding initiatives for our restaurants across the globe!”

One piece of advice you wish you had been given at IC: “Don’t take your courses and experiences for granted. While I feel so well-prepared coming out of IC, I really wish I had savored what we were learning a little more and took the time to step back and appreciate it, to read and re-read the articles/books/etc. that were given to me. College is truly an unparalleled experience, and it’s about just that – the experience. Learn to enjoy all aspects of collegiate life – your dorm, the classes, the campus, studying abroad, internships, writing papers, walking around the Commons – all of it. I also wish I had saved all the suggested book lists and movie lists that I got from professors…”

Favorite Honors Seminar you took and why: “That’s a tough one! I took two courses with Carla Golden, I feel like those classes opened me up to see gender and sexuality in a completely new way. Our discussions were always so open and frank, and I always walked in to the classroom excited and left the classroom inspired.

My ultimate favorite course was with Bill Sheasgreen at ICLC [Ithaca College London Center] which was London As Text. I have never walked so much in my life, but I have never felt a city’s history come alive around me and feel so tangible. I also did a theatre-focused trip to London through the Honors Program, and though I would hardly call myself a theatre buff, it really was inspiring for me and definitely helped me realize that I wanted to pursue studying abroad there.”

One word that sums up your university experience: “The beginning.”

Another fun fact about Sara is that we featured her little sister, Anna, who is a first-year student, in a Summer Student Spotlight earlier this year!

IC Honors Summer Student Spotlight: Annalise Haldeman

Meet incoming TVR major Annalise!IMG_0146

Annalise is taking this summer to explore her hometown of Bloomington, Indiana as well as going on a mission trip to Philadelphia, PA, a trip to Denver, CO to visit a friend and attending Lollapalooza in Chicago at the end of the summer.

Annalise is looking forward to all the opportunities the Honors Program offers!

“I am looking forward to explore new idea and possibilities with the Honors program. In high school you are stuck with a bunch of people who have to be in school. But know we are at a place that we chose. We decide to apply here and decided to accept when Ithaca offered us a spot in the class of 2019! And with the honor program it’s exciting that I will not only be with people who want to be at this school but want to learn and want to have discussions and widen their horizons. It’s all just so exciting!”

What are you doing this summer? Honors wants to know!
