Kyle is the president of the Honors Advisory Board and a double major in IMC and Sport Studies! He’s headed to NYC after graduation.

After graduation I will be taking a week to explore Istanbul and Prague. Following my passion for experiencing unique bars and similar establishments, I will be visiting a beer spa as well as a bar with a rock wall inside of it while I’m there. After my week abroad, I will be spending my summer interning at Havas Media in New York City as a part of my IRTS Media Fellowship! In addition to interning, the fellowship provides me with opportunities to network with hundreds of media leaders across NYC and learn how to create more access in the media industry to marginalized groups that are underrepresented.

Favorite part about IC:No matter where you are at IC, unless you’re in the Job hallway, there is always something beautiful to look at. You can take just a few steps outside of Sub Connect and BAM: view of Cayuga Lake. It also isn’t hard to take a short walk to Muller Pond between classes, frozen or not. There is always new territory to explore in the natural lands, gorges, and beyond. I love that at IC there is always a new place to study, appreciate, and reflect. Hey, and most of the people aren’t too shabby, either. “

Favorite Honors seminar (so far) and why:Women and Fairy Tales with Katharyn Machan was one of the most fun courses I’ve taken at IC. Dr. Machan is such a spirited character and we learned about fairytales, their history, and got to create some kick-ass lady characters of our own. Our whole class bonded through each others’ work, and I felt inspired by every piece I heard. That class and Dr. Machan gave me the motivation to continue writing poetry!”

Coolest opportunity you’ve had through IC and/or Honors:This past semester I was fortunate enough to study in London, and with the help of the Honors Program I got to spend five days in Edinburgh for the annual Fringe Festival. My time in Edinburgh was something I’ll remember the rest of my life. I experienced so much theatre, art, and culture in such a short amount of time. Those five days made me want to experience even more, and in the next four months I explored 15 different cities in 10 different countries around Europe.”

Favorite part about Ithaca College: “I love being able to walk past the Pub, through the Quad, or around the library and recognize as many faces as I do. Whether it’s my best friend or someone I haven’t talked to since freshmen year, I see certain people every day that feel familiar somehow. It’s taken spending semesters elsewhere to realize how comforting that aspect of IC is.”

Favorite Honors seminar and why:In the Beginning: Origin Narratives in Science, Religion and Fiction, with Nancy Menning & Luke Keller, because it got me thinking in ways I never have.”

Coolest opportunity you’ve had through IC and/or the Honors Program:Exploring Ottawa during its Winter Festival!”

Favorite part about IC: “It is hard to choose my favorite part about Ithaca College, but one aspect I really like is the size of my classes. The classes are just the right size; they are small enough that I am able to meet my professor and develop a professional relationship with them, but they are also large enough that I am often able to meet a couple of new students in each class. There are always smiling familiar faces, but there are also opportunities to make new friends.”

Favorite Honors Seminar you’ve taken and why: “One Honors seminar I really enjoyed was Cultural Encounters [with Ithaca College]. This seminar gave me the opportunity to attend several different types of events held on campus, even some that I may not have originally thought to attend. This seminar really encouraged me to appreciate everything that we have going on on campus. I also enjoyed supporting fellow students by attending the various events.”

Coolest opportunity you’ve had through IC and/or the Honors Program: “Thanks to my Advertising and Media Planning courses, my friend, Lauren Denecke, and I were able to learn about the 2014 Media Plan Case Competition, organized by the Washington Media Scholars Foundation. After progressing through the first two rounds of this competition, we were then selected as a Case Competition Finalist. We were one of six teams, from across the country, invited to attend Media Scholars Week in Washington, D.C., and to present our final media plan to a panel of judges at the Newseum. It was an amazing and intense week filled with lectures, tours, discussions, and finally, a large networking event. At the end of the week, following all six teams’ final presentations, Lauren and I were awarded 2014 Media Plan Case Competition Runner-Up (2nd place).”

IC Honors Summer Student Spotlight: Kyle James

Meet Kyle James, a rising senior IMC and Sport Studies major!

Kyle is spending his summer working full time at Campus Center & Event Services as a Lead Operations Manager, and is also researching the effects of the 2002 Winter Olympic Games on the infrastructure of Salt Lake City, building off of an independent study Kyle completed in Spring 2015. Thanks in part to a grant from the Honors Program, Kyle will also be spending about a week in Utah delving further into his research!

Kyle’s favorite part about the Honors program is that is pushes you out of your comfort zone.

“What I like most about the Ithaca College Honors Program is that it forces you to get out of your academic school and take courses you never would’ve dreamed about taking. Some of these courses, such as The Ring Cycle & Explosions in a Shingles Factory: French Modernism have proven to be some of the courses at IC that have challenged me the most academically and changed the way I think about and approach complex issues. In addition to the academic benefit, the Honors Program has led me to some of my closest friends and their ‘Bigs and Littles’ program allowed me to be a ‘big brother’ to a bunch of amazing people that are going to do great things in the near future.”

What are you doing this summer? Honors wants to know!

Favorite part about IC: “My favorite part of IC is the amazing people that inhabit it. The friendships I have created on this campus are ones that I treasure. IC has allowed me to find friends that understand what it means to be an outsider.”

Favorite Honors seminar and why: “Wonder Women and Lethal Girls: Feminism in Science Fiction and Fantasy. That freshman Honors seminar with Katharine Kittredge changed my life. It introduced me to a lot of social justice concepts and introduced me to people who were passionate about the two things that I hold close: books and justice.”

Coolest opportunity you’ve had through IC and/or the Honors program: “My coolest opportunity through IC has probably been having the ability to work at the LGBT Center through the IC Counseling and Wellness Center. The LGBT Center is a under-utilized resource on this campus that provides a haven for queer students and their allies. Working there has changed my life and allowed me to grow as a queer person and as a general student.”
