Admission to Honors

Incoming first-year students

If you are a prospective first-year student, you may apply to the Ithaca College Honors Program after you have submitted your application to Ithaca College. Your application will include a short essay in response to the following prompt:

In honors seminars, you’ll consider a wide range of perspectives and connect ideas from a variety of subjects.

Please write an essay (500 to 700 words) in which you respond to all of the following questions:

  • If you could design a new interdisciplinary seminar for the Ithaca College Honors Program, what would its subject be, and how would you teach it?
  • What life experiences and knowledge would you bring to this course?
  • Through this course and beyond, what will you contribute to the Honors community?

Please be specific about the readings, experiences, and teaching approaches you would want to incorporate into the seminar.

To apply, log in to your application status portal (after you apply to Ithaca College via Common App). You must be offered admission to Ithaca College before a decision will be made regarding your application to the Ithaca College Honors Program.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Submission of application to the Ithaca College Honors program
  • Offer of admission to Ithaca College
  • High school GPA of 3.0 (preferred)
  • Essay response (see questions above)

PROCESS

  • Apply via your application status portal (after you apply to Ithaca College via Common App).
  • Deadline: March 1 (music and theatre applicants may be granted an extension)
  • You will be notified of your application status to the honors program electronically.
  • Applicants to the honors program are notified on a rolling basis and may be waitlisted.

Acceptance to the honors program is based on multiple criteria, including your application essay, GPA, high school academic achievement, community involvement, and potential contributions to the honors community. The honors program also strives to ensure that as broad a range of majors as possible is represented. One hundred and twenty (120) first-year and transfer students are selected to join the honors program each fall.

Returning students

If you are a first- or second-year Ithaca College student with a minimum GPA of 3.0, you may apply to the honors program no later than December 1 of your second year. Admission is competitive.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Minimum college GPA of 3.0
  • Essay responses (see questions above)
  • Faculty recommendation
  • Plan demonstrating capacity to complete 20 credits of honors coursework in remaining semesters until graduation

PROCESS

  • Submit required materials (see above) to the director of the honors program at honors@ithaca.edu.
  • Deadline: Monday, December 2, 2019
  • You will be notified of your application status by mid-January.
  • Admitted students must enroll in at least one honors course in the spring semester to be fully admitted into the program.

IC Students Not Enrolled in the IC Honors Program

If you are not enrolled in the honors program, you may take intermediate honors seminars if there is capacity and the instructor grants permission.
