What are you passionate about? What do you love to do?

I have a passion and love for sports and helping people! I love playing volleyball, basketball, flag football, and many other sports! I have a very positive and vibrant attitude and love to radiate that positivity to other people. I love playing sports, hanging out with friends, being on social media, listening to music, watching movies, chilling, and going out to have fun!

What are you most excited for about Ithaca College?

I am very excited to become a leader in the IC community and of course to make lots of new friends! I plan to join clubs, intramural sports, and potentially IAP, CSTEP, and hope to get into the Jumpstart Program for Lead In!

What have you been up to this summer?

Currently, I am working at a beach club for my first summer job! I work in the snack bar and have been learning how to prepare salads, burgers, and just about any type of fast food item you can think of! I’ve worked the register, delivered food, and have also made new friends!

We’re always looking for interesting students to highlight in our Spotlight series.

What’s your favorite thing about IC?

I never had a lot of high school spirit, but I feel completely different about my college. Ithaca College has given me so much and provided me a community that challenges me, respects me, and opens its arms to me. I feel very fortunate to be studying at IC and know that even when I graduate I will still be a part of this amazing community.

What’s your favorite Honors seminar you’ve taken and why?

Definitely Sex, Gender, and Desire with Carla Golden! I’m definitely biased, but if you’ve ever taken a course with Carla, you know you’re in for some serious discussion. From my first course with her to this Honors seminar, Carla has given me much guidance and inspired me to pursue feminist activism. This course was also wonderful because of the other students in the class. Classroom discussions were something I looked forward to every Tuesday and Thursday. Coming out of this course I bonded with many of my fellow Honors peers while also opposing the patriarchy.

What’s the coolest opportunity you’ve had through IC/the Honors Program?

It’s hard to even begin with all of the amazing opportunities I’ve had through Ithaca College and my schools of Humanities and Sciences and the Roy H. Park School of Communications. One opportunity that was specifically helped by the Honors Program was being able to present at the fifth annual Society for Cinema and Media Studies Undergraduate Conference hosted by the University of Minnesota. Myself and another Honors student were 2 of 30 students chosen from a national pool for this conference. I was on “The Horrors” panel and my paper was titled, “French Witch Implores Psychedelic Orgies in Japanese Animated Sex Film: A Feminist Critique of ‘Belladonna of Sadness.'” It was great to geek out with a bunch of other cinema and media nerds and to present at a national conference as an undergraduate.

What are you passionate about? What do you love to do?

I’m a huge history nerd and love a good debate. I enjoy writing (both fiction and non-fiction) and wrote for my high school’s newspaper. I love music and have played clarinet for ten years and plan to continue in college. I’m also a pretty big sci-fi geek and enjoy a good Doctor Who or Star Trek marathon every now and then.

What are you most excited for about Ithaca College?

I look forward to trying new things and coming out of my shell a little more. I’m excited about all of the opportunities at my fingertips that’ll allow me to pursue my interests and maybe even find new ones.

What have you been up to this summer?

I’m trying to relax this summer but I’m looking forward to orientation and vacation to Cape Cod. As lame as it sounds, my favorite memory so far is playing frisbee with my friends at the park. We lost track of time and ended up there for over three hours!

Welcome to Honors, Sydney!
