IC Honors Summer Student Spotlight: Michael Rizk

Meet our student spotlight of the week, rising senior Architectural Studies major Michael Rizk!

DSC_0405This summer, Michael spent 2 and a half weeks in Germany and France with my family. Michael will also be an Orientation Leader in Ithaca for a month and a half (so if you’re an incoming first-year, don’t forget to say hi!), and then he’ll be off to Pennsylvania for a two week internship at a landscape architecture firm. Then, he’ll be home in Rochester before coming back to IC for Peer Career Advisor training in August. A busy but awesome summer! Michael also enjoys the Honors program because it allows students to explore different fields.

“My favorite part about the Honors program is the diverse range of courses offered, which give me a chance to pursue something of interest outside my field study.”

IC Honors Summer Student Spotlight: Kayla Dwyer

Meet Kayla, a rising junior Journalism major!

Kayla

This summer, Kayla is interning as a news reporter for The Morning Call, a daily newspaper in Allentown, PA.

Kayla’s experience in the Honors Program has allowed her to be involved in many different aspects of campus life.

“As a student whose extracurriculars pull me in many different directions, I have been grateful for the openness of the Honors community. I have lived in it for two years, and though I spend long hours in the Park school or a Whalen practice room, my peers are always welcoming and inclusive when I do return. Some of my fondest memories so far have been from the many Honors seminars I’ve taken, which are also where I made some true, life-long friends. When I talk about the Honors Program, what I highlight the most is how much it has expanded from simply a course credit requirement to a comprehensive program encouraging both scholarly and community engagement.”

IC Honors: YMLT

What is YMLT you ask? I hope some of you figured it out by now. It stands for You Might Like This.  Honors Headquarters will make these types of posts periodically throughout the summer. If someone out there has the time and skill it would be neat to have one of these bikes around.

IC Honors Summer Student Spotlight: Anna Gardner

Anna is going to be a new face on campus! She is an incoming Film, Photography and Visual Arts student.

11 2This summer, Anna has an internship at the Film Society of Minneapolis St. Paul! Anna is looking forward to the opportunities the Honors Program offers.

“While I’ve lived in northern Minnesota my whole life, I have always been drawn to other cultures and other ways of thinking. Being part of the IC Honors Program allows me countless opportunities to explore the world and interact with people who’s experiences differ from my own. To solve problems, you have to look outside your world and your comforts; this is what really drew me to the Honors Program.”

IC Honors Summer Student Spotlight: Madison Mangano

Meet Madison, a rising senior Physics major!

10358560_10206735425083514_4412821114529086646_nMadison is spending her summer right here in Ithaca, working on completing her senior thesis research. She’s working with a program that turns spectral data (graphs of the light of stars) into sounds so they can reach a wider range of audiences.

“It involves understanding it myself as well as building other programs that will allow others to understand how it works. I hope to be able to make edits to the sounds the program puts out as well as make it a bit more graphically exciting in the future.”

Madison’s favorite part of the Honors program is the community it fosters and the friendships it makes!

“We’re a bunch of kids who want to actually make a difference, and we improve ourselves and the world around us in order to do that.”
